Australian Healthy Shopping Guide
| Do you ever get confused when shopping for food products? The Nutrition or Health claim on a food label can ‘seduce’ us into purchasing a particular product, because we may think it is the ‘healthier’ option. It may very well be, but it also may not. We all should know what we are actually buying. Making informed decisions about the food you eat is a critical part of looking after the health of you and your family. Understanding the ‘health or nutrient’ claims on labels, often mostly visible on food packages and learning how to avoid the traps is a skill that can be learnt to shop smarter and healthier. We know however, that not all people can, want to, or have time to, analyse labels on products and learn how to choose the healthiest options for their needs. |
Ingredients lists and nutrition information tables on food packages hold the key to understanding what’s actually in the products/packets we buy, but aren’t as clearly visible to the eyes as the claim that can “draw us in”.
Reading food labels is a great way to compare different products and shop smart. This is especially important for anyone with diet related conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, weight problems or a food allergy. However, it is not always simple to decipher nutrition labels.
There is an ever increasing array of food products in our supermarkets. So many choices. Food manufactures know we are trying to eat healthier. Health sells and often for more. Most people when they go shopping, like to get ‘in and out’ as quick as possible. It is hard enough for many people, negotiating the supermarket trolley traffic rules and cues, children’s requests and other background noise without spending hours studying and comparing the fine print on food labels, to know the best ‘nutritious’ buys.
A healthy eating plan should include a wide variety of foods that are low in fat (particularly saturated fat), sugar, and salt and high in fibre and nutrients.
